Just for Kids

Physical activity is a key determinant of health and quality of life for Canadians and quality of life for Canadians of all ages:

  • For children, it is important for healthy growth and development.
  • For working-age adults, it reduces stress and the risk of chronic, disabling disease.
  • For older adults, it increases the likelihood of continued independent living and quality of life.

"The disease process leading to osteoporosis, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease begins in childhood if physical activity levels are insufficient.  Physical activity is as important in protecting one's health as wearing a seatbelt.  Being active should be as habitual as brushing your teeth," says Dr. Clair LeBlanc, paediatric sports medicine physician and member of the Canadian Paediatric Society.

The Canadian Paediatric Society, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Teachers' Federation issued a joint call for action back in 2002 urging parents, educators, politicians and policy-makers to act to address the alarming rise in the incidence of child and youth physical inactivity and obesity.

At that time all three organizations officially endorsed the resources released by Health Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), aimed at increasing physical activity among Canada's youngest generation.  Canada's Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth is what HotFlex has based their children's program on.

Dr. Andrew Pipe of the College of Family Physicians of Canada said, "Physical inactivity is one of the major health issues confronting children and youth in our entire community and must be addressed as a priority."

A major concern regarding childhood obesity is that obese children tend to have an increased risk of becoming overweight in adulthood and with higher morbidity and mortality rates in adulthood.  Increasingly, paediatricians are seeing a rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, childhood hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes in severely overweight children.

Canada's Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth published by the Public Health Agency of Canada, encourage children to strive towards at least 30 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity per session for children under 10, and 60 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity for children 10 and over.

Parents are role models and can help children build physical activity into their daily routine.  By helping your children build physical activity into their daily routine you can create a pattern that may very well stay with them for the rest of their lives.
In addition, discussing and making healthy choices when it comes to nutrition and exercise is as important for parents as it is for their children.

HotFlex founder and owner Stone Hague has started a children's program on Saturdays based on the guidelines set out by Canada's Physical Activity Guide for Children and Youth.    Sign up your son or daughter for our Saturday classes and come in for a workout yourself at the same time.

Ask about our programs for kids which are geared towards building endurance, flexibility and strength which in turn contributes to a healthy body.
